Global coffee exports decline, prices rise to 10-year highs

According to data from the International Coffee Organization (ICO), total global coffee exports in October reached 9.7 million bags, 
Down 4.4% from 10.1 million bags in the same period of 2020. that arabica coffee exports fell 8.8%, to 6.2 million bags; but in return, exports of robusta increased by 4.4%, to 3.51 million bags.


The steepest decline was recorded for Brazilian arabica coffee, falling from 4.1 million bags in October 2020 to just 3.6 million bags in October 2021. This was followed by Colombian arabica, which fell 11.3% to 1.1 million bags.


Green coffee exports amounted to 8.5 million bags in the first month of the 2021-2022 crop year, down 6.1% from 9.1 million bags in October last year. In general, coffee exports from other countries are still mainly green coffee, accounting for 90.6% and 90.2% of total export turnover in coffee years 2021-2022 and 2020-2021, respectively.


 In the first month of coffee year 2021-2022, coffee exports from South America reached nearly 5 million bags, a sharp decrease of 20.6% compared to 6.2 million bags in the same period of the previous crop year. Brazil, the world's largest coffee exporter, recorded a 23.8% drop in export volume, to 3.4 million bags from 4.5 million bags in October last year. Colombia's exports also fell 5.0% to nearly 1 million bags. In addition, Peru's coffee exports decreased by 23.1%, reaching 0.5 million bags.




In the opposite direction, coffee exports of Asia and Oceania increased by 25.8%, from 2.5 million bags to 3.1 million bags. Of which, Vietnam's exports increased 13.7% to 1.7 million bags in the first month of the current crop year. India's exports increased by 33.3% to 0.5 million bags.



Exports from Central America and Mexico also increased 35.0% year-on-year to 0.5 million bags. Honduras' exports continued to recover positively after two natural disasters caused by hurricanes Iota and Eta with exports increasing 293.2% to 80,238 bags in the first month of the 2021-2022 crop year.


Nicaragua, which suffered the same climate disasters as Honduras, also recorded an export growth of up to 70% compared to October 2020, reaching 92,838 bags. Besides, exports increased by 15%, 6.9% and 22.2% respectively in Guatemala and Mexico and Costa Rica.

Similarly, coffee exports of the African region also increased by 5.1% over the same period, reaching 1.1 million bags. This growth was recorded in Uganda (+13.7 percent) and Ethiopia (+37.2%), while decreasing in Tanzania (-28.3%), Kenya (-47.4%) and the Coast Ivory (-45.2%).
